Manuel Antonio is the most popular National Park with Ticos. One reason for this is the unspoiled beaches that lie within easy walking distance of the entrance station. Among the most important nesting areas in the Western Hemisphere of the endangered green turtle, the stunning Tortuguero National Park lies on Costa Rica’s beautiful Caribbean coast in the northeastern region of the country.
Tortuguero is a place to get off the grid for a couple of days to see unique wildlife - brilliantly colored macaws and toucans, monkeys, sloths, iguanas, and more. Turtle hatching season, roughly October and November, is a particular highlight for lovers of sea turtles.

Tongariro is New Zealand's oldest national park. Park located on New Zealand's North Island. The park has 3 active volcanoes: Tongariro, Ngauruhoe (Mount Doom in “The Lord of the Rings' films) and Ruapehu with its ski slopes. The Tongariro Alpine Crossing trail passes the Emerald Lakes and boiling mud pools, culminating at still-active Red Crater. Park wildlife includes the brown kiwi and the whio, or blue duck. Tongariro River has rapids and trout.
It was established in 1887, making it the oldest national park in the country and the fourth oldest in the world.
The park covers an area of 795.98 square kilometers (307.48 square miles) and is known for its stunning volcanic landscapes, including three active volcanoes: Mount Tongariro, Mount Ngauruhoe, and Mount Ruapehu. These volcanoes not only create a dramatic backdrop but also offer a range of outdoor activities and breathtaking scenery.
One of the most popular attractions in Tongariro National Park is the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, a 19.4-kilometer (12-mile) hike that takes you through diverse landscapes, including volcanic craters, alpine meadows, emerald lakes, and steaming vents. The hike is considered one of the best day hikes in the world and offers incredible views of the surrounding mountains.
Another notable feature in the park is the Whakapapa Ski Area on Mount Ruapehu. It is the largest ski area in New Zealand and offers both beginner and advanced skiing and snowboarding options. The ski season typically runs from June to October.
For those interested in Maori culture, Tongariro National Park holds great significance. The park is part of the dual World Heritage Tongariro National Cultural Landscape, recognized for its spiritual and cultural associations with the indigenous Maori people. Visitors can learn about the Maori history and legends associated with the area through guided tours and cultural experiences.
