Judaean Desert (IL)
A 5th C AD Greek-Orthodox Monastery (the Byzantine period), built on a cliff just outside of the Kidron Valley, near Jerusalem– in the northern part of the Judean Desert. On the map, it looks halfway between Jerusalem and the Dead Sea. Monk Sabas spent all his life (for nearly fifty years) establishing Missions and Monasteries in the Holy Land (Israel). The author of the 'Life of Sabbas', Kyrillos of Skythopolis, summarized his lifetime mission as 'converted the desert to a city.
After his death in 532 at the age of 93, Sabas was buried in the yard of the monastery.
