Onekahakaha Beach Park beach

Address: 74 Onekahakaha Rd Hilo, HI 96720
Type: Beach
Phone: +18084640840
Description:

Onekahakaha means 'drawing [pictures] sand,' but the origin of the place name is now unknown. Besides its Hawaiian name, Onekahakaha was commonly called Machida Beach during the first half of the twentieth century. About 1915, Tomozo Machida obtained a longterm lease on approximately 13 acres of the present beach park. The only access to the natural pocket beach was a trail, so Machida put in a dirt road and then built a two-story beach home. Onekahakaha continues to attract more families with children than any other beach park in the district of Hilo. The park's popularity is due to a combination of features. Besides lifeguard service provided by the county, there are picnic pavilions, restrooms, showers, and ample parking; but the main attraction is the large shallow, sand-bottomed ocean pool protected by a boulder breakwater. This pool offers one of the safest shoreline swimming areas along this coastline during normal weather conditions and is therefore especially attractive to families with young children. Although occasionally in recent years the sand at the park has been artificially replenished because of erosion, Onekahakaha has always been blessed with a natural pocket of white sand. READ MORE ->

Brama Floriańska historic_place

Historic place icon Brama Floriańska

Address: ul. Floriańska Śródmieście 31-015 Kraków Poland
Description:

Medieval Fortifications of Krakow Medieval Krakow had round it two-mile-long walls with 39 towers and 8 gates. Their construction began in the late 13th century. The city walls proper were as high as ten meters and 2.5-meter thick. Alongside them additional lower walls ran. And an eight-meter-deep and 22-meter-wide moat protected both. In the first decades of the 19th century Krakow's imposing if outdated fortifications were largely pulled down. Fortunately, the main city gate called Brama Florianska survived together with three adjacent towers, the walls between them, the 16th-century city arsenal, and a giant barbican in front of them all. Brama Florianska, the main gate of the medieval Krakow The Brama Florianska gate, built about 1300 as a rectangular Gothic tower of wild stone, is 33.5 m tall. In the Middle Ages the Krakow furriers defended it. Its present baroque roof dates from 1694 and a big 16th-century bas-relief of St. Florian adorns the south wall. The famed 19th-century painter Jan Matejko designed a stone eagle on the other side of the gate tower. At the Brama Florianska gate Krakow's Royal Road begins. Here entered kings and princes, foreign envoys and guests of distinction, coronation processions and other parades, to move up the Florianska Street to the central Grand Square (Rynek Glowny), and further down the Grodzka Street to the Wawel Royal Castle. Zamek Książ castle

Castle icon Zamek Książ

Address: ul. Piastów Śląskich 1 58-306 Wałbrzych Poland
Type: Castle
Phone: +48746643850
Description:

Legend has it that the original castle at Książ was built at the end of the 13th century by Bolko I, Duke of Świdnica and Jawor, but it is best known as the fiefdom of the Hochberg family, who purchased it in 1508 and owned it until 1941. The castle we see today took shape during the 16th century, when the central tower, walls and ramparts were added to the original building of the ducal seat, which was itself greatly extended. Though the Thirty Years War saw the castle suffer invasion and conquest (first by Saxons, then Swedes), it survived intact under the masterful stewardship of young Hans Heinrich Hochberg (the same Hochberg who donated trees from the Książ forests to build the Świdnica Peace Church), who at war’s end would redefine the castle, making it more of a stately home than a fortress: much of the defensive wall was taken down, and landscaped gardens replaced ramparts. The transformation from Gothic to Baroque was carried out by Conrad Maximilian Hochberg during the early part of the 18th century, when the Baroque east wing (including the Maximilian Hall, the finest part of the castle) was added, the Summer Pavilion erected, the main tower remodelled and the gardens extended. The Neoclassical western and northern wings were added in the 1910s, much to the whims of Maria Teresa Olivia Cornwalis-West, or Daisy, as she was known. An English aristocrat (whose brother would later be stepfather to Winston Churchill), Daisy married Hans Heinrich XV Hochberg in 1891. Ksiaz was confiscated by the Nazis during World War II, and tens of thousands of Nazi prisoners, mainly Jews from Hungary and Poland, were forced to build a massive subterranean complex with 12-meter high ceilings beneath the Gothic and Baroque ramparts that rose above. Most of the network of underground structures lie unfinished directly beneath the castle and in the surrounding area, all part of the mysterious Project Riese (German for “giant”). READ MORE ->

Description:

Discover 2000 years of history when you visit the Basilica of San Clemente. Admire the spectacular mosaics and frescoes. Travel back in time to explore the Basilica of the fourth century and then descend into the world of Rome in the first century where there is still a pagan temple. History. The Basilica of San Clemente is situated some three hundred yards above the Colosseum, on a road that rises gradually to St John Lateran from the valley between the Coelian Hill on the south and the Oppian Hill on the north. It is named after Pope St Clement, the third successor of St Peter in the See of Rome, who died about 100 A.D. Until a hundred years ago, indeed, it was commonly thought that the present church was that to which St Jerome re¬ferred when he wrote about 390 that « a church in Rome preserves the memory of St Cle¬ment to this day ». But in 1857, Fr Joseph Mullooly, the then Prior of San Clemente, began excavations under the present basilica, uncovering in the process not only the original, fourth- century basilica directly underneath, but also at a still lower level, the remains of an earlier, first-century building. Later excavations, notably those conducted in 1912-1914 by Fr Louis Nolan when a drain was being built between San Clemente and the Colosseum, show¬ed that underneath this third layer of buildings there was still a fourth stratum, that contain¬ing buildings destroyed in the fire of Nero in 64 A.D. The level, therefore, of the valley in which San Clemente lies was about sixty feet lower in the first century than the present level. After the fire of 64 the gutted buildings were filled in and used as foundations for further houses, at a level that is roughly that of the floor of the Colosseum today. At this third level at San Clemente there are two buildings that are separated from each other by a narrow passage¬way. The less pretentious of these is a brick building, possibly an « insula » or apartment house, in the courtyard of which there is a small Mithraic temple of the end of the second century. HISTORY OF THE BRIDGE. The 1349 bridge was built in between the banks of the Tiber river in 134 AD by Emperor Hadrian in order to connect the center of Antique Rome with his newly built mausoleum (today better known as Castel Sant’Angelo). At the time the bridge was known as the “Aelian Bridge”, which simply meant “Bridge of Hadrian”. For many years the bridge was used as a passageway for Christian pilgrims on their way to St. Peter’s Basilica. The current name of Sant’Angelo is used since the 7th century for a legend in which Archangel Michael was seen atop the castle with his sword drawn to indicate the ending of the plague of 590 AD. The impressive Statue of Michael can now be seen on top of Castel Sant.Angelo, facing the bridge. During the 16th century, the bridge was used as a place to display bodies of the executed in order to convey a warning to the people. READ MORE ->

Address: Piazzale San Paolo 1 Ostiense 00146 Roma Italy
Location: Ostiense
Type: Church
Phone: +390669880800
Description:

At the beginning of the 4th century, with the end of the persecutions and the promulgation of the Edicts of Tolerance in favour of Christianity, Emperor Constantine ordered the excavation of the cella memoriae, the place where Christians venerated the memory of Saint Paul the Apostle, beheaded under Nero around 65-67 A.D. Above his grave, located along the Ostiense Way, about two kilometers outside the Aurelian Walls surrounding Rome, Constantine built a Basilica which was consecrated by Pope Sylvester in 324. Between 384 and 395 the Basilica, under the emperors Theodosius, Valentinian II and Arcadius, was restored and enlarged according to an extensive project consisting of five naves opening out into an atrium (quadriportico), or courtyard with four rows of columns. Throughout the centuries the Basilica would not cease to be embellished and enhanced by the Popes. For example, the massive defensive wall was built to protect against invasions at the end of the ninth century, while the bell tower and the magnificent Byzantine door were constructed in the eleventh century. Other important additions include Pietro Cavallini’s mosaics in the façade, the beautiful Vassalletto family’s cloister, Arnolfo di Cambio’s celebrated Gothic baldachin and the Candelabrum for the Paschal candle attributed to Nicola d’Angelo and Pietro Vassalletto of the thirteenth century. This historical period represents the golden age of what had been the biggest Basilica of Rome, until the consecration of the new Basilica of St. Peter in 1626. This sacred place of Christian pilgrimage was well-known for its artistic works. On the night of July 15, 1823, a fire destroyed this unique testimony to the Paleo-Christian, Byzantine, Renaissance and Baroque periods. The Basilica was reconstructed identically to what it had been before, utilizing all the elements which had survived the fire. In 1840 Pope Gregory XVI consecrated the Altar of the Confession and the Transept. Other embellishments followed the reconstruction. In 1928 the portico with 150 columns was added. Contemporary work in the Basilica has uncovered the tomb of the Apostle, while other important and beneficial works are carried out, as in the past, thanks to the generosity of Christians from all over the world. The Pincian Hill, one of the most romantic and picturesque places in the Capital, is a Roman hill (although not one of the Seven Hills) offering a breathtaking view of the Piazza del Popolo and the city. It is part of the Villa Borghese and is within the Aurelian Walls. The balcony overlooks the Piazza del Popolo and the Villa Medici. The site was coveted by ancient Romans, who built villas and gardens (horti) here. The name “Pincian” comes from one of the families that settled here: the Pincii. The present “Muro torto” (“Twisted Wall”) is part of the foundations of their villa. The aristocrat Lucullus, famous for his wealth and banquets, also had holdings in this area. The so-called “horti luculliani” (Lucullus Gardens) eventually merged with the horti sallustiani (Sallust Gardens), owned by the Latin historian Sallust. It is no coincidence that the Pincian Hill has been called “the Hill of Gardens.” In ancient times, the slopes of the hills were also used as a burial ground. The ashes of Emperor Nero were kept here in Domitius' tomb. The current neo-classical layout was commissioned by Napoleon. It is the work of architect Giuseppe Valadier, who in 1816 also created the majestic Piazza del Popolo. READ MORE ->

Basilica of St John Lateran / Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano church

Church icon Basilica of St John Lateran / Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano

Address: Piazza di San Giovanni in Laterano 4 Esquilino 00184 Roma Italy
Type: Church
Phone: +390669886433
Description:

Historic cathedral & papal seat Landmark cathedral, the Pope's official seat, with ornate 1700s facade & statues of the Apostles. The basilica of Saint John Lateran was built under pope Melchiade (311-314), it’s the most ancient church in the world. Due to the fact that the pope is also the bishop of Rome, Saint John in Lateran – being seat of the bishop’s residence – is also Rome’s Cathedral. The present structure of the Basilica resembles the Saint Peter's basilica. The original plan had already five aisles. The ancient church was residence of the popes until the coming back from the exile in Avignone (1377), when it was moved to the Vatican. It was pillage-stock of the Visigoths (410), the Vandals (455); the earthquake in 896 caused the central aisle roof to collapse (rebuilt under pope Sergio III in 904-911). Put on fire in 1308 first and in 1361 then, it was remade under the pontificate of Gregorio XI (1370-1378), following the plan of the ancient structure that had by then become a ruin. The repair works continued during the entire fifteenth century and the sumptuous ceiling was realized in 1562. Sisto V (1585-1590) ordered the construction of the Blessings Lodge (positioned at the end of right side aisle), and the making of the Lateranense building assigning the project to Domenico Fontana. After about 140 years Pope Innocenzo X Pamphili (1644-1655) decided in 1646 to bring the cathedral to new splendour entrusting Francesco Borromini of the repair. The architect was supposed to finish the works in time for the Holy Year of 1650 and had to reserve (according to the pacts with the pope) the structure of the ancient Basilica of St John Lateran. The artist put 12 niches spaced up by 5 huge arches supported by as many pillars in the mid aisle. The great statues of the Apostles that we can admire today in the borrominian niches were made by sculptors of the late baroque in the beginning of 1700. In 1731 Pope Clement XII (native from Florence) summons a competition for the new façade of Saint John in Lateran. The winner – without too much merit – is the Florentine Alessandro Galilei (the second place is for Luigi Vanvitelli, with a much better project) who in 1735 finishes the works of the present façade. Under the ogival tabernacle (at the end of the central aisle, in the transept) is the papal altar where only the Pope can give mass. Above the sacramental altar there’s a fragment of the table on which Jesus consumed the last supper. The Cathedral hosts also Jesus’ blood, brought to Rome by centurion Longino. Numerous are the chapels of noble families (Orsini, Torlonia, Massimo…) realized by some of the best artists of the different epochs. In the intermediate right aisle, close to the first pillar, one can admire “Boniface VIII proclaims the Jubilee of 1300”, a fresco made by Giotto. READ MORE ->

Church icon Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore

Address: Piazza di San Maria Maggiore 28 Termini 00100 Roma Italy
Location: Termini
Type: Church
Phone: +390669886800
Description:

The Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore is one of Rome’s four Major Basilicas, along with the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls, St. Peter’s Basilica, and the Archbasilica of St. John Lateran. Its importance is based on its size, age, and the fact that it is the largest church dedicated to the Virgin Mary and also one of the oldest.

Although its architectural details span more than a thousand years, its main layout remains unchanged from when it was first built in the 5th century, making it one of the finest surviving examples of an early Christian church. Inside it’s packed with artistic and religious treasures. Aside from various relics, jaw-dropping stone-work, and the tomb of Gian Lorenzo Bernini, the church’s main draws are its invaluable 5th-century mosaics depicting various scenes from the Old Testament. St. Mary Major, as it’s called in English, is a perennial draw for both religious pilgrims and lovers of the art of Late Antiquity.

Description:

Built as a private summer retreat between AD 118 and 134, Hadrian's Villa was a vast open-air museum of the finest architecture of the Roman world. The grounds of the Imperial palace covered an area of 120 hectares (300 acres) and were filled with full-scale reproductions of the emperor's favorite buildings from Greece and Egypt. Although excavations on this site began in the 16th century, many of the ruins lying scattered in the surrounding fields have yet to be identified with any certainty. The grounds of the villa make a very picturesque site for a picnic, with scattered fragments of columns lying among olive trees and cypresses. For an idea of how the whole complex would have looked in its heyday, study the scale model in the building beside the car park. The most important buildings are signposted and several have been partially restored or reconstructed. One of the most impressive is the so-called Maritime Theater. This is a round pool with an island in the middle, surrounded by columns. The island, reached by means of a swing bridge, was probably Hadrian's private studio, where he withdrew from the cares of the Empire to indulge in his two favorite pastimes, painting and architecture.
