Trail icon Multnomah Falls Trail

Address: 50000 E Historic Columbia River Hwy Bridal Veil, OR 97010
Type: Trail
Phone: +15036952372
Description:

Moderate hike to breathe taking scenery. A waterfall as magnificent and memorable as any in the country is located just a 30- minute drive outside of Portland. Visiting Multnomah Falls, a 611-foot-tall roaring, awe-inspiring cascade of icy water, lets you experience the power and beauty of nature up close and with ease. From the parking area off of I-84, a 5-minute walk is all that separates you from the exhilarating spray at the base of the falls. According to Native American lore, Multnomah Falls was created to win the heart of a young princess who wanted a hidden place to bathe. Although you can see the top portion of the falls from the highway, to view both tiers you have to walk to the viewing area located in a carved-out opening in the rock face. Tilting your head up in the narrow rocky confines of the steep cliffs, you get a mind-boggling perspective on the sheer magnitude of the falls. According to a Native American legend, Multnomah Falls was created in efforts to win the heart of a princess who wanted a hidden place to bathe. READ MORE ->

Table Rock trail

Trail icon Table Rock

Address: Robert Louis Stevenson State Park Hwy 29 Calistoga, CA 94515
Type: Trail
Description:

Total distance: 4.40 mi (There-and-back) Max elevation: 2,250.00 ft Despite its proximity to popular wine country, Robert Louis Stevenson State Park feels rugged and far-flung. A half-day’s hike out to Table Rock and back gives visitors a taste of such remoteness—and encounters a number of peculiar surprises along the way. Approaching from Calistoga, the hike to Table Rock takes off from the shady parking area on the right (hikers climbing Mount St. Helena will want to park off to the left). Roughly one mile from the trailhead, the path abruptly emerges from tree cover at a rocky outcropping known to some as “the turret.” Here the views to the south and east are outstanding: much of the upper reaches of Napa Valley unfold below. At roughly 2,750’, this is the highest point reached on the hike. READ MORE ->

Chimney Rock trail

Trail icon Chimney Rock

Address: Point Reyes National Seashore Point Reyes Sta, CA 94956
Type: Trail
Phone: +14154645100
Description:

Chimney Rock may seem like the McDonalds of the wildflower world, reliably serving thousands of aficionados every spring. The trailhead gets crowded (even on weekdays) with amateur and professional photographers, as well as nature lovers clutching field guides. Hikers seeking a quiet nature experience may wish to look elsewhere. The display is impressive, though. Carpets of flowers including goldfields, Hikers enjoying wildflowersblue-eyed grass, and mule ear sunflowers are dramatic against a backdrop of cliffs receding sharply to the ocean. There are two short official trails, one which drops down from the trailhead to the historic lifeboat station, and a second which runs out to a bluff overlooking the ocean. From the overlook near the trailhead, elephant seals can sometimes be glimpsed during winter, their mating season. In spring, bring binoculars to spy on migrating whales. Note that the main trail is the only official trail now on the bluffs of Chimney Rocky -- due to unstable terrain, I highly recommend you do not hike the side paths. READ MORE ->

Altes Schloß Eremitage museum

Museum icon Altes Schloß Eremitage

Address: Eremitage 1 95444 Bayreuth Germany
Type: Museum
Phone: +49921759690
Description:

At the Old and New Hermitage Palace in Bayreuth there is a variety of buildings to discover from down the centuries as well as an enchanting park created by Margravine Wilhelmine herself. On a stroll around the grounds, you can admire the fountains, water features, sun temple and the mock ruined theatre, and explore the mysterious grottos. The Old Palace, built for Margrave Georg Wilhelm in 1715, has a music room, an exquisite Japanese room and an equally lavish Chinese mirrored room where Wilhelmine wrote her memoirs. The crowning glory of the ensemble is the New Hermitage Palace built between 1749 and 1753. Its crescent-shaped design with beautiful arcaded walkways exemplifies the rococo style. At the centre of the two wings is the temple of the sun with Apollo gracing the roof. In the mid-1740s Wilhelmine also had a theatre built in the style of a classical ruin, and she is considered the founder of this remarkable architectural style. Regular summer performances were reintroduced in 1982. On a visit to Bayreuth, the venue of the Wagner Festival, be sure not to miss the magnificent Margravial Opera House. It was inaugurated in 1748 for the wedding of Princess Friederike and Duke Carl II Eugen von Württemberg. Another place of interest is Fantaisie Palace – the summer residence of Wilhelmine's daughter, Duchess Elisabeth Friederike Sophie von Württemberg, who inherited this landscape garden idyll in 1763. Teatro Greco Romano (Teatro Antico di Taormina) museum

Museum icon Teatro Greco Romano (Teatro Antico di Taormina)

Address: Via Teatro Greco 40 98039 Taormina Italy
Type: Museum
Phone: +39094223220
Description:

Perched on a hilltop in one of the most beautiful settings imaginable is the Ancient Teatro Greco of Taormina. Located on the eastern shores of Sicily, Taormina is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful cities in all of Italy. Sitting some 250 meters above the Ionian Sea, Taormina is a popular destination with tourists due to its trendy beaches and beautiful setting. The Greek Theatre here is the second largest of its kind in all of Sicily behind only the Greek Theatre of Siracusa. Built in the third century BC, the theatre is remarkably well preserved and is still used today for opera and musical performances. Constructed during the Greek Hellenistic period, the theatre's design and horseshoe layout are typical of Greek construction. The theatre was literally carved out of the rock on Mount Tauro and had a capacity of 5,000 spectators. However, the extensive use of brick in the theatre suggests a Roman influence and researchers feel that the Romans most likely rebuilt the theatre over the original Greek foundation. This transformation took place during the 2nd century AD and the Romans used the theater for gladiator contests as opposed to plays and gatherings during the Greek period. While the theatre is most often referred to as the Teatro Greco because of its Greek origins, it is also referred to as the Greco-Roman Theatre because of its Roman renovation.

Honopu Valley - The Valley of the Lost Tribe trail

Trail icon Honopu Valley - The Valley of the Lost Tribe

Address: Kokee State Park Waimea, HI 96796
Type: Trail
Description:

Stunning and mysterious Honopu Valley is accessible only by boat, and only then after swimming out to a ledge and climbing a dangerous 75′ sea cliff and then crossing the narrow ridge into Honopu Valley proper. The remoteness of Honopu Valley has inspired many rumors and legends. Until the mid-19th century pre-Hawaiian people of uncertain origins flourished in this valley, but then disappeared, which is why it’s sometimes referred to as the Valley of the Lost Tribe. It is also rumored to be the last home of Kauai’s fabled Menuhune. Legends aside, we know the beach and surrounding cliffs were used as burial sites for the chiefs that lived along the coast. Their bones were carried by hand and placed hundreds of feet up the cliffs. Warriors would volunteer to climb these cliffs, placing the bones of their beloved chiefs into a suitable cave. When they were satisfied the bones were secure, the warrior would jump to his death, thus securing the locations’ secret. The Hawaiians believed that their chiefs were the direct descendants of gods and that the “mana” or life force of the chiefs was so strong that, if found by the wrong people, it could be used against the tribe. Walking along the cliffs and on the sand dunes, bones can be seen after being exposed by heavy rains or winds. Several movies feature Honopu Beach, including: The 70’s version of King Kong with Jessica Lang, Six Days and Seven Nights, the third Jurassic Park, and Raiders of the Lost Ark. READ MORE ->

Description:

Mysterious peat-bog corpses, traces of the Vikings and exquisite paintings – all these and many other treasures can be found in the two state museums at the most important palace in the far north of Germany. Palace was originally a Renaissance stronghold but repeated renovations and extensions over the centuries eventually produced the baroque palace we see today. To this day it stands on a picturesque island on the outskirts of Schleswig, close to the Danish border. Built in around 1500 the vast, twin-aisle Gothic hall later became the famous Gottorf library. This is currently used to display medieval sculptures and altars. 1544 marked the start of the palace's golden age. As the power of the dukes of Gottorf grew, the palace also increased in size and splendour. The deer hall, completed in 1595, is one of the finest Renaissance banqueting halls and can still be seen in its original state. The magnificently decorated chapel dates from the same era, and is also well worth a visit. Highlights here include an early-baroque organ and the ducal prayer room with intricate carvings and intarsia inlays. In 1637 work began on a baroque terraced garden modelled on Italian gardens. At its heart was a magnificent pavilion containing the Gottorf globe – the world's earliest planetarium. Restored in autumn 2007, both garden and globe can once again be admired in all their baroque glory. For visitors with a thirst for culture, Gottorf Palace contains the Regional Museum of Art and Cultural History and the Regional Museum of Archaeology and is also well worth a visit. Of particular interest is the extensive collection on the history of travel, which features various travel-related artefacts including horse-drawn carriages and sleighs, painting a vivid picture of how people travelled in the 19th century. Nearby attractions: just across the water from Schleswig is the former Viking settlement of Haddeby, which is home to an enthralling Viking Museum. The Bible garden at St. John's Abbey in Schleswig is a place of peace and tranquillity offering a journey of biblical and horticultural discovery. READ MORE ->

Museum Wasserburg Anholt (moated castle) museum

Museum icon Museum Wasserburg Anholt (moated castle)

Address: Schloß 1 46419 Isselburg Germany
Type: Museum
Phone: +49287445354
Description:

Anholt moated castle in the western part of Münsterland is one of North-Rhine Westphalia's few privately owned castles. It first appears in records in the 12th century. Further extensions in around 1700 created a grand baroque residence with the feel of a palace. Today, the moated castle is used as a museum founded by Prince Nikolaus of Salm-Salm, which features a private collection documenting his family's history. The historical housekeeping accounts reveal a wealth of information about the original room layouts and furnishings. Apparently, the 'fat tower' was once only accessible via a rope ladder above the entrance to the dungeon. The present configuration of three upper floors probably dates from the middle of the 17th century. Gothic arches are incorporated in the external brickwork and the wall facing the 'fat tower'. The adjoining room, formerly a guard room and armoury, later became the library. The banqueting hall has a magnificent stucco ceiling from 1665 featuring the royal coat of arms and gold ornamentation. On display in the marble room, which was created in 1910, is the majority of the china collection dating from the 17th and 18th centuries. READ MORE ->#
