Skocjan Caves cave

Cave icon Skocjan Caves

Address: Matavun 12, 6215 Divača, Slovenia
Type: Cave
Phone: +38657082100
Description:

Impressive 3-mile (5 kilometers) long prehistoric caves (guided tour) Referred to as the Underground Grand Canyon, the Škocjan Caves in Slovenia are considered some of the largest subterranean chambers in the world. Like many natural wonders, the caves were formed over vast periods of time by a river, the Reka, which still flows along the bottom of the underground canyon. Though the “Underground Grand Canyon” nickname is catchy, the Škocjan Caves probably have more in common with New Mexico’s Carlsbad Caverns; the cave’s largest canyon measures, at some points, almost 200 feet across and 460 feet tall and is spanned by a narrow, vertigo-inducing bridge. (The Grand Canyon, meanwhile, is 18 miles across at its widest point.) Thanks to the water flowing through the caves, a number of stunning geological features can be found inside the chambers, including limestone pools and massive stalagmite formations. Archaeologists have found evidence that humans lived in the caves as early as 3,000 B.C. In one of the cave’s chambers, explorers found a burial site, complete with 10 skeletons and funerary goods. The first written records of the caves date back to the second century B.C., and the caves are marked on one of the oldest published maps of that region of the world (what is now Slovenia). Modern exploration of the caves began in the late 1800s and continues to this day. The caves are also home to a very unique inhabitant: the blind cave salamanders (Proteus anguinus), know as the človeška ribica (human fish) by locals because of its fleshy, pink skin and resemblance to a human embryo. The Palace Armoury is an arms collection housed at the Grandmaster's Palace in Valletta. One of the world’s largest collections of arms and armour that is still housed in its original building. The Knights of St John were a unique brotherhood of resolute warrior monks. From Malta, their island stronghold, these combatant aristocrats from the noblest houses of Europe, carried out their relentless crusade against the Ottoman Turks in defense of the Catholic faith. The Palace Armoury is certainly one of the most visible and tangible symbols of the past glories of the Sovereign Hospitaller Military Order of Malta. Grand Master Alof de Wignacourt transferred the Order’s arsenal to the Magisterial Palace in 1604 where it was the pride of the Order.Armour of Grand Master Alof de Wignacourt Apart from being lavishly adorned with elaborate trophies of arms, it held enough arms and armour to equip thousands of soldiers. It was housed in the magnificent hall at the rear of the building, right above its present location. At present, it is displayed inside two halls that were originally the stables of the palace. Following the forced departure of the Order of St. John from Malta, the armoury somehow lost much of its original grandeur. The Roman Rotunda /the church “St. George”/ is the oldest preserved structure which still serves its original purpose in the Sofia city. It was built in the 4th century by the Romans according to a fairly complex plan: a vast, circular central chamber, surmounted by a dome and surrounded by four semi-circular apses. Ther temple has been significantly changed since then.First it was destroyed by the Huns, rebuilt as church, then turned into a mosque by the Ottomans. The Roman Rotunda has been recently restored, it worth seeing due to its simple, but still exquisite architecture, remarkable remnants of frescoes and the entire complex of ruins behind the altar. The St. George curch stands several meters under the contemporary ground level. This archeological complex of the church and the above mentioned remains was on the territory of the Constantine’s quarter in the antique city. The residence of Emperor Constantine I the Great itself was found under the neighboring Hotel Rila. To the east lie excavated foundations of the Roman settlement of Serdica. Moderate-sized Episcopal cathedral begun in 1867 & featuring elaborate 1950s stained-glass windows. - Google St. Andrew’s Cathedral in Honolulu was created through the support of a royal family that never worshipped there. King Kamehameha IV and his consort, Queen Emma, invited the Anglican Church to Hawaii. They planned a baptism for their young son Albert as the first member of the church. His tragic death at the age of four meant that Queen Emma became the first baptized in the new Hawaii missionary diocese. The King died at the age of 29 on St. Andrew’s Day, November 30, 1863 – just 15 months after the death of his young son. His successor, King Kamehameha V, dedicated the cathedral to St. Andrew as his brother’s memorial. Queen Emma remained personally involved in the construction of the cathedral. She traveled to England to raise money and commission architects and purchased stone in France. The corner stone of the new stone cathedral was laid on March 5, 1867. The building style is called 'Early French Gothic Revival.' According to church history, it is a recreation of the style of most parish churches in England in the late Middle Ages. The first phase of the cathedral was finished in time for Christmas, 1886 but the young Queen had died a year earlier. READ MORE ->

The Crocker family, an influential family in San Francisco at that time, donated their Nob Hill land for the construction of the present structure. Description:

A replica of St. Peter's in Rome, this 1915 beaux arts church features a copper dome & rose window. - Google There have been four Roman Catholic cathedrals in St. Paul. The first three were built between 1841 and 1858. The fourth, and the most architecturally distinctive, opened in 1915. Since then, no building in the Twin Cities has approached it in ambition or magnificence. The massive granite cathedral at the foot of Summit and Selby Avenues is the fourth in the history of the archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis. The first was Father Lucien Galtier’s log-cabin Chapel of St. Paul, elevated to the status of cathedral with the 1851 arrival of Bishop Joseph Cretin. A three-floor brick building succeeded it later in 1851; a bigger one in stone followed in 1856. Both stood in downtown St. Paul. Between 1850 and 1900 St. Paul grew from a village to a city of over 160,000. Many of the new citizens were Roman Catholics, mostly of German and Irish origin. In 1904 Archbishop John Ireland (1838–1918), a potato-famine Irish immigrant and a protégé of Joseph Cretin’s, decided to build yet another cathedral. Ireland hired French architect Emmanuel Masqueray (1861–1917). Together they conceived a building with a grandeur rivaled only by Cass Gilbert’s state capitol, completed in 1905. The commanding site they chose sits on the edge of a bluff then called St. Anthony Hill. In a biblical context, it can be seen as permitting the House of God to look down, literally and symbolically, on moneychangers (as represented by downtown St. Paul) and Caesar (as represented by the state capitol). Construction began in 1906. The building opened, undecorated inside, in 1915. Masqueray died in 1917, Ireland a year later. The Boston firm of Maginnis and Walsh was hired in 1923 to complete the interior, a project that went on until 1940. READ MORE ->

Historic church with a green-tiled dome, bell towers & a grand interior filled with ornate mosaics. - Google The history of the Parish of Saint Louis – known fondly as the “Old” Cathedral – and the early history of the City of St. Louis are inextricably bound. Over the course of the last 180 years, they have borne witness to many important events and forever galvanize the Old Cathedral’s place among the most historically significant in our community. The Old Cathedral is unique, both in St. Louis and across America. It couples a museum that contains many artifacts from the early days of the Catholic Church in St. Louis and local historical information of an active parish community. The parish has survived waves of cholera, fire, arson attempts, urban development that began with the westward migration of thousands of Americans, the Civil War and World War I and II. The Early Years In its early years, the Old Cathedral was the only church of any denomination for local settlers until about 1816. It is truly the “Mother Church” of St. Louis, the first permanent church in St. Louis, and the 1834 church was the first Cathedral west of the Mississippi River. The Old Cathedral signifies the beginning of Catholicism in the Colonial West, spreading faith-based values to all cultures across a developing America. The Cathedral Block, as designated by Auguste Chouteau in 1764, was among the three largest and most important central blocks in town. The others were the Public Square and Company Block that extended to the edge of the Mississippi River. Residents of St. Louis surrounded these three blocks with their plots of land. The Old Cathedral became the heart of life in the city and was viewed by many as the centerpiece of the city. The current Basilica and its predecessor churches were also the hub of civic activity. It was here that town residents came for spiritual nourishment, counseling, and to learn. Saint Louis University was born on the church block, arguably from the education citizens received at the Old Cathedral. READ MORE ->
